Pete’s, a vintage gas station in Williams, Arizona, a town of just 3,000 or so residents but a well-known place among visitors from around the world. Known as “The Gateway to the Grand Canyon” 60 miles to the north, it is the southern terminus of the scenic railroad that takes tourists there and (in 1984) was also the last town on old Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40 across five southwest states. The Wigwam Motel on Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona, where one can indeed “spend the night in a wigwam.” The brainchild of Frank Redford, this is one of what wer originally seven Wigwam Motels nationwide. The Small Parlor in the northeast corner of the first floor in the 1856 section of the Texas Governor's Mansion in Austin. The cove molding and mantels with mirrors date to the Joseph D. Sayers Administration, 1899-1903. Built in 1854, the building was designed by prominent architect Abner Cook and has been the home of every Texas governor since 1856. The building is the oldest continuously inhabited house in Texas and fourth-oldest governor's mansion in the United States that has been continuously occupied by a chief executive.
